1. Who These Terms Are Between

The site is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to use it. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
3. Safety Warning: Power Tools, Electricity, and Compressed Air
Read this section even if you skip the rest. The equipment covered on this site is capable of causing permanent injury and death.
General
Nothing on this site is a substitute for the manufacturer’s operating manual, the training your trade requires, or the judgment of a qualified person on site. Read the manual that came with your tool and follow it. Where our guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions differ, follow the manufacturer. Use the guards, handles, and safety devices supplied with a tool, and never defeat an interlock or remove a guard to make a job easier.
Rotary hammers, hammer drills, and drilling equipment
Drilling and chipping into concrete and masonry produces respirable crystalline silica, a documented cause of silicosis and lung cancer. Use dust extraction or wet methods and appropriate respiratory protection, and follow the exposure control requirements that apply to your work, including the OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard where it applies. Rotary hammers and large drills develop enough torque to break a wrist if a bit binds, so use the auxiliary handle, keep a firm two-handed grip, and consider a clutch-equipped tool. Scan for buried services before drilling into any wall, floor, or slab. Concealed electrical conductors, gas lines, water pipes, post-tension cables, and reinforcing steel have all killed people. Bits and chisels get hot enough to burn, and hearing protection and eye protection are not optional.
Drill presses, magnetic drill presses, mortisers, and joiners bring their own hazards. Clamp the work, never hold it by hand. Magnetic drill presses must be secured with the safety chain and used only on clean, flat, adequately thick ferrous material, since a magnet that lets go with an annular cutter turning is extremely dangerous. Loose clothing, gloves, jewelry, and long hair can be pulled into a rotating spindle.
Mains electricity and batteries
Electrical work should be carried out by a licensed electrician and must comply with the National Electrical Code and any state, county, or municipal amendments that apply where you are. Use ground fault circuit interrupter protection on construction sites and in damp or wet locations. Inspect cords and plugs before every use, do not use a corded tool in the rain or in standing water unless it is rated for it, and do not defeat a grounding pin or use an undersized extension cord. Assume any conductor is live until it has been proven dead with a suitable instrument. Lithium ion battery packs can vent, catch fire, or rupture if they are punctured, crushed, short circuited, charged outside their temperature range, or charged with an incompatible charger. Use the charger the manufacturer specifies, stop using a pack that is swollen or physically damaged, and do not charge unattended packs on a combustible surface.
Compressed air
Compressed air is stored energy and deserves the same respect as any other pressure vessel. Never exceed the working pressure marked on a compressor, receiver, hose, fitting, or tool, and never modify or disable a safety relief valve. Drain condensate from the tank on the schedule the manufacturer gives, because internal corrosion thins the wall of a tank and a tank that ruptures under pressure is lethal. Do not repair, weld, drill, or otherwise alter an air receiver. Depressurize the system before changing tools, hoses, or fittings, and use whip checks or restraints on connections that could separate under pressure. Never point an air nozzle at yourself or anyone else. Compressed air forced against skin or into a body opening can cause an embolism, and even low pressure can drive debris into an eye. Do not use compressed air to clean clothing or skin. Engine driven compressors produce carbon monoxide and must never be run indoors or in an enclosed space. Compressors are loud enough to damage hearing over a working day.
Your responsibility
You are responsible for working safely, for using appropriate personal protective equipment, for complying with OSHA requirements and local codes, and for hiring a qualified professional when a job is beyond your competence. If you are unsure whether a job is within your competence, that uncertainty is your answer.
